 Unit: Rome is Burning!

Goal: Your goal is to:
• understand the changes the Roman Empire faced.
• understand the failure of the Roman Empire in addressing the critical changes facing it.
• understand the feudal system which emerged in Europe with the collapse of the Roman Empire.
• understand contributions of the Roman Empire to Western Europe and the United States.

Role: You work for Ketchum Inc., a global public relations firm.
Audience: Mayors from cities from around the world who are attending the Leadership Summit 2016.

Situation: The Lord Mayor of Rome, The Honorable Ignazio Marino, is hosting a summit of mayors who will gather in his beautiful and exciting city on Friday, October 7, just five short weeks away.

Product: Use any form of media to communicate the theme Rom’s leadership and legacy. The mayor has asked your team to create a presentation for the Leadership Summit 2016 that focuses on the Roman Empire. He specifically wants your team to focus on the leadership and legacy of the empire. Your presentation should include:
• The changes the Roman Empire faced
• How leaders addressed the changes facing the empire
• The consequences, good or bad, of Rome’s leaders and their decisions
• The lasting legacy of the Roman Empire
• The contributions Roman Empire has on Western Europe and the United States

Your success and your team’s success will largely be based on how well you follow the inquiry process. During the next several weeks you will follow this process in order to create the best possible presentation for the mayor. This process includes:

Reflecting: Create and maintain a “Reflection Log” of the inquiry process.

Planning: Identify the topic you will investigate. Identify possible information sources. Identify the audience and presentation format. Outline a plan of inquiry.

Retrieving: Develop an Action Plan. Locate and collect resources. Select relevant information. Evaluate information. Review and revise the plan for inquiry.

Processing: Establish a focus for inquiry. Choose pertinent information. Record information. Make connections and inferences. Review and revise the plan for inquiry.

Creating: Organize information. Create a product. Think about the audience. Revise and edit. Review and revise the plan for inquiry.
Sharing: Communicate with the audience. Present new understandings. Demonstrate appropriate audience behavior. Symposium of Mayors.

Evaluating: Evaluate the product, inquiry process, and inquiry plan. Revise and revise personal inquiry model. Transfer learning to new situations/beyond school.

Criteria for Success

• Create a presentation for the Leadership Summit 2016 that includes:

During the next few weeks you will be assessed using:

Criterion C: Communicating – i. Communicates information and ideas with clarity

        Try using your textbook or the TCI placards before using the websites. Each has basic information on the accomplishments of Rome. From there you can complete more a more in depth investigation.

  4. The websites did help me but, I’m researching about Roman architecture and buildings and some of the websites already have the information that I have…… And I don’t know what do now……. I google some stuff but, the websites aren’t that helpful……….

  5. I think that the wealth was a big part of Rome. I also think the emperors had part of it too. The emperors decided to stop conquering lands so they didn’t get money. There was also barbarian attacks effected them too because they would lose money every time.

  6. He wants you to believe in every religion and culture. It is also saying that the more we know about each other the more we like each other. Ans it’s saying that religion and culture can create conflicts and problems.

  7. According to this article it is hard to determine religion because there are so many different religions. There are tons of different religions that all believe in different things, So it is difficult to define religion to another person because different people believe in different things but some believe in the same religion.
